At our February 2023 gathering, we had the honor of hearing the life story of one our chapter members, Astronaut Tony England.
Thanks for everyone who braved the ice storm outside to come and hear Tony speak. He kept everyone in the crowd from age 8 to 80 engaged as he reviewed his long and storied career, all while weaving a compelling picture of NASA and the people who made it happen.
If you've seen the film "Apollo 13," you may recall the scene where they have to figure out how to make a square air filter cartridge fit into a round hole in order to get the Apollo 13 astronauts home safely. Our first surprise was that Tony found the Apollo 13 film to be much more accurate and true to history than he expected. The second surprise? Tony was in the room when that event actually happened, and was part of the team that figured out the solution.
Tony had a number of other good stories to tell, including about the space shuttle mission that he flew to space aboard.
Couldn't join us that evening? We have a recording of the event that you can watch any time. Tony's presentation begins at about the 6 minute mark, and the entertaining audience Q&A session begins about 45 minutes in. You can also see a photo gallery of the event.
