For our February gathering, we are excited to hear from Tony England, a Chapter 234 member and a former NASA astronaut. Selected in 1967, he flew aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on STS-51-F in 1985.STS 51-F's primary payload was the Spacelab 2 laboratory module. A helium-cooled infrared telescope (IRT) was also flown on this mission, which observed 60% of the galactic plane in infrared light. Tony was onboard for the only “Abort to Orbit” maneuver during the Shuttle program.
Before flying on the Shuttle, he helped develop and use radars to probe the moon on Apollo 17. After his career with NASA, he was the dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at U of M’s Dearborn campus.
He has 4,000+ hours of flying time, flies a Rans S-7 based at Antrim County, and is looking for a hangar. Wouldn't you like to have an astronaut in your hangar?
Please welcome him at our Thursday 9 February event. We'll be at our usual location, our chapter office at 2640 Aero Park Drive, except that we'll gather in the hangar to allow more space for family, friends, and the community.
